So what is this MPesa thing and how does it operate?

Well, mobile banking is not new in the market because most banks now employ mobile phone technology to enable customers access simple transactions such as balance enquiry, mini-statements and purchase of air-time.

M-PESA, the new bank in your mobile phone technology is different in the sense that the service allows you to use your mobile phone to carry out important money transactions that were hitherto a preserve for banks. The service is available to all members of the public, even if you do not have a bank account or bankcard. Available services include cash deposit, cash withdrawal, funds transfer, balance enquiry, direct purchase of air time among others.

The most interesting bit is the fact that Kenya is the first country in the world to introduce the bank in your mobile phone service, which is offered by Safaricom - the main mobile phone operator in the country.

The facility was initially intended to assist the poor rural folks who do not operate bank accounts to access money transfer services within reach. People who work in towns found it convenient to send money to their distant relative through the bank in your mobile phone service. They also discovered that apart from the transfer, you could actually retain the balance in your phone until such a time that you were ready to transfer or withdraw it. Most people now maintain huge balances in their mobile phone banks.

The other convenience with the bank in your mobile phone is the many M-Pesa agents who are spread all over the country and operate 24 hours thus making it easy to access the service anywhere.

On security issues, I would give M-Pesa a 9 out of a scale of 10. It is almost impossible for an un-authorized person to access the money, unless he has access to the security code given to the account holder. Even when you lose your phone, the bank in your mobile phone balance is still secure! All you need to do is report to Safaricom and a new SIM will be issued with your account balance intact.

HOW TO DEPOSIT CASH
All you need to do is go to an M-PESA Agent and:
1. Give him the cash and your mobile phone number
2. You and your Agent will receive SMS confirming the deposit

HOW TO SEND MONEY
3. On your M-PESA phone menu, select “Send Money”
4. Enter recipient’s phone number, the amount and your PIN
5. You and the recepient will receive SMS confirming the transfer

HOW TO GET CASH
If you are a registered M-PESA Customer
Go to an M-PESA Agent and:
1. Give your phone number and show your ID / passport
2. Go to your M-PESA menu, select Withdraw money
3. Enter the Agent number, the amount and your PIN
4. You and your Agent will receive an SMS confirming the transfer
5. The Agent will then give you the cash

If you are not a registered M-PESA customer but have received notification of money transfer to you
Go to an M-PESA Agent and:
1.Give your phone number and show your ID/Passport
2.Give the code in your SMS from M-PESA.
3.The Agent will do the transaction on your behalf using his phone.
4.You and your agent will receive an SMS confirming the transfer.
5.The agent will give you the cash.

Just like that! Can you see now why the banks are up in arms against the bank in your mobile? I think they are justified - if they must survive.

Are You a Victim of Frequent E-mail Delivery Failure?

If you are like most of us, you probably receive hundreds of junk mail every day. Lots of internet service providers and some individuals, are taking steps to block or reduce the amount of junk email in their inboxes.

However, the trouble with these measures is their inability to identify legitimate email. Assuming that your email to other places is working and yet not being delivered, it's quite possible that you're a victim of these programs.

There are several reasons why legitimate email typically gets erroneously blocked: The receiving system thinks your email looks like spam, the receiving system thinks that you're sending it from an address that is or has been accused of being a spammer. Being automated systems, it's the mistakes associated with that thinking that cause legitimate email to be mistaken for spam.

Spam content filters assign points for various behaviors that are also associated with email that comes from a spammer. As soon as you collect too many points (where "too many" is up to the receiving system, or the individual recipient), your email is flagged as spam. Some of the culprits to watch for in your email include:

• Phrases in your email such as "adults only", "over 18" and the like.
• Sexual performance enhancement drugs.
• Sales related shouting (or alternative SHOUTING or not) as sales copy.

Finally, when you detect that your email address has been blacklisted, or you suspect something is wrong, you should contact your ISP. They're responsible for keeping spammers away from it, and ensuring it's working.

If they can't help, then it's probably time to move on and get an ISP that's interested in keeping your email working always.

The other day I was travelling to Kisumu and used the public transport in my country. I noticed something quite interesting. The bus conductor had a knack for identifying potential customers from hundreds of meters away. To some of us, all pedestrians looked the same. But not so for the conductor. Any time he sported somebody whom he thought was waiting to take a bus ride, he would start to wave in inviting gestures and for sure the person would wave the bus down and get on. These guys can read your mind from miles away.

Can you imagine how powerful this could be to you if you were able to read the intention of people around you. How many times have you missed to sell something, only to discover that the person whom you just passed picked the item from your competition? Of course it is difficult to identify potential customers from a crowd. Like a fisherman, you must cast your net wider. Consider who would make a good customer and then look for ways to meet those people. Chamber of commerce meetings, co-operative meetings, local civic associations, regional trade shows, professional conferences, and phone calls can all be effective. So, too, can networking online through message boards and mailing lists. Don’t spam the boards or lists with links to your products. Just participate and contribute to the groups that are likely to include potential customers for your services and you will get known.

Everyone you get in contact with is a potential customer. The woman next to you at a wedding or the man sitting in the seat next to you in the church, might just be a customer. Instead of minding your own business, strike up a conversation. Find out what they do, and eventually they’re likely to ask what you do. Majority of good businesses are brought in through such encounters.

As a rule never go out flat to shout from the roof tops that you are a home business guy. Many people still think of home businesses as unprofessional. Even if you rented office space at the up-market address, you wouldn’t be shouting about it all the time. So, why say you are in a home business to your potential customer? Home is just the location of the office. It’s the business – the product or service you provide – that’s important.

A common characteristic shared by successful home business owners is the steadfast, almost fanatical way in which they guard their time.

Large corporations and businesses hire people and spread the responsibilities, and although I highly urge you to leverage your time by surrounding yourself with people who will take care of lower return activities, there is still no escaping the many interruptions and distractions that are a part of home business life.

People who play at the top of their game whether in business, sport or life, have learned how to either eliminate or reduce distractions by mastering the use of one simple word ... "No."

The inability and fear around using these two little letters has caused more home business failures, tears, stress, frustration and relationship troubles than any other.

And although many new home business owners insist their greatest weaknesses are lack of marketing and sales skills, the biggest obstacle that is blocking their ability to develop these skills is the fact they are not saying no to time-robbing activities so they can focus on building and growing.

Lack of time is the number one challenge every one of my clients brings to the table when we begin working together.

Learn to say "no" to doing everything yourself.

Oftentimes I'll hear, "But I'm in start-up, I have to guard my spending" and I respond with, "You can't save yourself into profitability. You have to focus on making money."

This mental block will never allow you to grow, especially at an accelerated rate.

Low pay-off activities can be delegated, bartered, given to volunteers, students and family members. Do some creative brainstorming with your coach, mastermind group or trusted colleague.

Learn to say "no" to the demands of daily living.

How many times have you said "yes" to the following even though you either didn't want to or knew it would take you away from your own priorities?
• taking care of your neighbor's kids after school because she had a hair appointment
• volunteering to cover the refreshments table at your child's high school dance
• loaning out equipment or items you know you won't get back unless you ask for them several times
• agreeing to listen to your friend rant for the third time this week about how his wife is trying to ruin him in a nasty divorce battle
• taking your mom to visit her friend across town every week because your brother and sister are too busy
• making Johnny and Sally's beds because they have to rush to school in the morning and don't have time
• going to every birthday and holiday dinner a family member hosts
• reading every single e-mail and taking every single call that comes in...

By not saying "no" to the hundreds of non-critical demands that are placed on you every month, you will not create the business success or freedom you want and deserve.

The two biggest obstacles in mastering the skill of saying "no" are fear and guilt. Fear that you will be loved less or rejected and feeling guilty that you may have hurt someone's feelings.

Saying "no" doesn't have to hurt anyone or cause you to be rejected and the way you deliver the message can make all the difference for you.

To refuse a request be honest and assertive in your reply by stating, "I'm sorry, however I have to turn down your offer/request at this time because I've been so busy with obligations, I've neglected my own priorities and have to give them my attention right now."

If others get angry with you or try to make you feel guilty for wanting to give yourself the attention you deserve, it's time to decide whether or not they're the kind of people you want in your life.

Start small. Build your "no" muscle slow and easy and work your way up to the larger demands. Like any skill, you can develop it and once you become a master, you'll enjoy quantum leaps in your happiness levels and business success.

Avoiding Common Work at Home Scams

Working from home is a great way to supply the additional income often needed for one spouse to stay home and raise their children. Sadly, many people are scared away from doing so because of the many scams that are so prevalent today. While it can be hard to tell fact from fiction, it is possible. With so many excellent work-at-home opportunities available today, it's well worth the time to explore so you can be able to start your own business and enjoy the many benefits the business provides.

Here are several tips to avoid work-at-home scams:

When researching companies that hire home-based workers, the best place to start is the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB will have information on that business if there have been disputes or other problems. You'll want to look for a pattern of "Unresolved" or "Unanswered" disputes, which will be an indication that there is a problem with the company in question. The business does not need to be a member of the BBB to have complaints filed against them.

Next, perform an Internet Search on the company you are researching and see what others are saying about them. If you see a pattern of negative comments, often that's an indication that you may need to explore the company in more detail.

There are also websites such as BBBonline.com that will tell you some of the common scams around. One of these scams is the "work-from-home typing" scam. Scammers often lure job seekers with promotions such as the ability to earn $35,000.00 a year, or promising to provide a list of companies that will hire them.

Diana Ennen, author of Virtual Assistant, The Series: Become a Highly Successful, Sought After VA (Virtual Assistant), has been a home-based word processor for over twenty years. Ennen states, "Working at home as a typist is an excellent opportunity that often only requires excellent secretarial skills. However, be cautious of offers guaranteeing a list of companies that will hire you. The truth of the matter is that most of these companies aren't even aware they are on this list. There's so much information available online today that there is no need to fall for this scam."

It's also important to know the difference between paying for information about working from home and actually investing in a home-based business. Most home-based businesses, such as direct sales companies, are valid ways to make an income. However, because you need to make an initial investment many people are confused and believe these to be scams as well.

Think about home-based businesses in the terms of your local fast-food chain. A fast-food restaurant will pay you if they hire you as an employee. However, in order to start your own franchise of that same restaurant, you would need to make a monetary investment. The same holds true when you begin a home-based business. You must make an investment, but in return you receive the means to begin your own business - generally the paperwork needed, marketing materials and product for display. Still, you must do your research when considering a home-based business. It's important to know things like: the history of the company, their reputation, how many representatives are in your area, and what quotas must be met.

Whether considering a telecommuting position or a home-based business, speak with others who have worked with the company you are contemplating. Ask for references of other employees/business owners in your area.

There are many legitimate ways to work from home, but when seeking a work at home opportunity, it's important to take your time and do your research. Unfortunately, there are people who make it their primary goal to take money from the unsuspecting. If you are thorough in your examination you will not become one of their. There is a coming home-business boom. You may not read much about it, since home business activity takes place quietly, but it's coming nonetheless. All of the elements are there to support this quiet boom. Layoffs are increasing. Home-equity gains of the past few years provide the modest capital needed for a home-based launch. And people are getting tired of reporting to offices where salaries are frozen and advancement opportunity is narrowing as people hold tight to their current jobs.

The biggest recent factor to fuel this boom came on September 11. There are certain to be millions across the nation now who shudder as they commute to a tall office building. The attack has also dramatically increased our desire to stay close to family. Parents of young children are probably growing disenchanted with the life of daycare and office buildings in the new world that abruptly appeared on September 11. Since job alternatives are scarce during this downturn, you can expect people to start visiting business opportunity fairs seeking home-based enterprise opportunities.

Two or three years ago I spent a few months working with a leading business opportunity and franchise show, living the gypsy life while giving seminars on how to shop for franchises. This was during the late-1990s boom years of early ecommerce and high employment. It was a great time to start a business. Yet attendance at these shows was down across the country. Who needs the risk and trouble of a business launch when you can raise your earnings simply by jumping from good-paying job to better-paying job. And with the stock market sky-rocketing, you could accumulate wealth simply by shifting your nest egg from one fast-flying stock to another.

With fewer choices in the job market and no opportunity in the stock market, people will naturally start to consider a business launch. Just 15 years ago, that meant rending office space or a storefront. Not any more. A home-based business is perfectly respectable now. It's even coveted. The home business is accurately perceived as offering more personal freedom than the out-of-home launch that comes with the strings of large capital investment and staff management.

We can thank the last major down cycle for taking the stigma out of home enterprises. The early-to-mid 1980s saw corporations laying off while collar workers for the first time. In earlier down cycles, while collar workers were immune to layoffs as companies trimmed blue-collar manufacturing jobs. The laid-off white collar workers became consultants and worked from home. Suddenly the home enterprise was legitimate. Running a company from your spare bedroom no longer meant you spent your day holding Mary Kay and Tupperware parties.

The Internet increased the allure of the home-based start-up. Most shoestring e-biz companies begin in the home, whether the company trades in products or services. For a small Net-based business, there is little reason to rent offices. Besides, statistics from the Small Business Administration (SBA) strongly suggest your odds for success are greater if you launch from home.

The SBA has found that 52 to 55 percent of all businesses are no longer active after five years. For those companies launched and grown in the home, the failure rate is 45 to 48 percent after five years. Placing your business in your home gives you a slightly better than even chance for survival. The improved odds most likely have to do with the lower overhead of a home-based business.

With a soft economy and a growing number of laid-off workers who will naturally consider a business start-up when they discover their job prospects are dim, this is not the best time to launch a new enterprise. But I can tell you from personal experience, the decision to launch a business is not usually rational or logical. A home business start-up boom is likely in process right now. It's not because of opportunity; it's because of desire.
